Project Samos ended October 2015
From 2010 untill 2016, we worked on the island of Samos.
There was little or nothing at that time in 2010 for the many street cats of this island.
Iris, the founder of the charity decided to do something about it.
First fund raising was started to be able to start neutering projects, with the help of volunteer vets, to stop the endless cycle and to diminish the numerous sick, suffering and dying cats and kittens.
Then food collecting was next, so the many street cats also got food to survive.
Slowly more and more people joined the volunteer group, and then a small shelter was started on Samos, where many sick or injured cats and kittens were taken in.
In the last years, about 500 street cats a year were neutered, many sick and ill cats received help and treatments.
There is even a vet room now, and a lot of equipment to help the street cats.
In september 2016 we decided to look out to help in other parts of Greece, because there are so many other places where help is desperately needed for the many street cats.
The work for Samos has been taken over by other volunteers, a very good start has been set up on Samos.
Please have a look on our new projects here!

13 november 2014 The rescue of Kastro!
One of our biggest challenges during 2014 has been the rescue and treatment of "Kastro" a Persian that lived on the streets in Samos. We dont know his history, but it is likely that he was a discarded pedigree kitten and forced to llive on the streets. Here is his story so far. (the photo's say it all..)
Photo left: January 2014 - We first noticed Kastro when he appeared at our feeding station. In very poor condition and suffering from severe Flea Allergy Dermatitis. We decided then that action was needed but we were unable to catch him at that time. We did however start a course of Stronghold to improve his skin
Photo middle: September 2014 - Kastro appears again after many many weeks unseen. Fed by one of our supporters, we knew that we had to take him into our care.We took him to the local vet who said that Kastro had a fever and was suffering severe respiratory problems and would need a long couse of antibiotics
Photo right: November 2014 - Kastro's respiratory problems are nearly treated and his overall condition has changed beyond words. His weight has doubled and his Flea Allergy has gone.

10 April 2014 - Do You Live In Holland - Maybe You Can Help?
If you live in Holland, you can help the street cats and kittens that need us so much.
One way you can is to place our collection boxes at your own shop, at work, your club, your vet etc. We can send you our official collection box cover easily! Just let us know!
The cats and kittens of Samos need us!
Note - at this time this in only possible in the Netherlands. Collection boxes in Greece are organised by us in line with Greek tax laws.
9 April 2014 - Great News For Sausage and Patsy!
Many of our supporters will remember "Sausage" the tiny kitten handed to us just before Christmas with a severe ear infection.
For the last three months, he has been receiving extra special care with our Foster mummy Evi - she has been able to give him lots of attention and care, and all the medicines he has needed to
grow stronger. Sausage has been kept company by Patsy (black and white) who was found as an orphan kitten.
Yesterday, both Sausage and Patsy (now the best of friends) found a new loving home together in Samos. The new owners have bought them lots of new beds, blankets, toys and food - here they are enjoying their new bed in their new home.
We are so happy for Sausage and Patsy!
8 April 2014 - An Update about "Aphelia" The Marina Cat
Sterilised by us in January this year, we caught up recently with this lovely female cat that lives in the Marina area of Pythagorio, Samos.
She is called "Aphelia" by the local people and boat owners who give her food. We think she is looking great. We are happy to have given her a more relaxed and kitten free life.

6 April 2014 - Meet "Paco" From Potokaki
We were alterted late last week about a young male cat with a severe ear injury.
After some patient waiting by one of our local supporters, we were finally able to capture him and get him some much needed vet attention. He has severe Necrosis behind his left ear which will need a long course of medication and daily application of skin regeneration cream. His condition is very similar to "Beauty" also in our care. We took the opportunity to sterilise Paco whilst he was under anesthetic, but of course, we could not clip his ear.
Paco will remain in our care until he is fit and well again

4 April 2014 - The Story of "Sabbato"
This adorable baby kitten was found dumped in a rubbish bin in Pythagorio, Samos on 15 March by one of our supporters. She immediately took him home to offer much needed Babycat milk - we were happy to help provide babycat milk powder from our own supplies to make sure the kitten had the best start in life.
As he was found on a Saturday, his name is "Sabbato", Greek for "Saturday"

18 January 2014 - The Story of "Glyka"
This 6 week old kitten was found close to a supermarket in Votsalakia, Samos by a Tour Guide who contacted our volunteers for help. After a check at the local vet, she was diagonised with Herpes in her eyes and was very sick. We were given a choice between putting her to sleep or giving her help and a chance of survival. Of course, we chose to help her.
Despite only having a very small amount of sight Glyka continues to recover well and now no longer needs medication. She loves to play and even climbs her favourite tree. She is a very cuddly cat and adores both cats and dogs.
A very brave cat with a big character.

27 April 2013 - An Update On "Lizzie" in Samos
We know that some of our supporters are helping Lizzie by sending us regular donations for her welfare, and many of you follow her progress. We appreciate these donations as she is a street cat that we care for everyday - she has had a really tough life on the streets in her short life, losing kitten after kitten
to the hazards of street life, and now has ill health.
She continues to have medication from us due to fluid in her abdomen and a general lack of good health. We are speaking to the vet in Samos about having further tests (including heart tests) to see how we can bring her back to 100% health. Her blood test showed no problems at all. She also suffers slight Asthma due to the dusty streets.
She is seen here today, yawning and showing how few teeth she has left from her life on the streets (eating the wrong foods etc).

26 April 2013 - Our New Flyers Start To Appear In Samos!
Our new Greek Cat Rescue Flyer has started to appear in windows in Samos!!!
We hope that we can raise even more donations this year to do even more work with the street cats with our four main goals...feeding, sterilising, emergencies and adoptions.

26 April 2013 - Saving Little "George"
This little one was found wandering all alone with no sign of the mother. Dirty, tired, crying and hungry...we have taken him into one of our Foster Homes in Samos Town today.
26 April 2013 - Help Us To Keep Our Sterilisation Projects Going
We must keep our cat sterilisations going. Right now many kittens are suffering,
dumped, or die of starvation.. There are far too many street cats in Samos, and the consequence is many become ill because of lack of care and food.
We need help! We depend 100 % on donations to do our work, We estimate that we need about 2250 Euros to neuter well over 100 cats. Please help us to reach this goal! Every single cat that is neutered becomes a much better chance of surviving and staying healthy!

25 April 2013 - The Street Cat "Bin Nose" Explained !
You will see many cats in Samos and Greece with this type of nose. At first it
looks like an infection or a serious injury but in reality it is oil and dirt that is found in the garbage bins as cats look for food.
We have noticed that this eventually goes away with time. Its almost impossible to clean off the cat (if they can be handled easily). It shows the mark of a true street
cat!

25 April 2013 - Food For A Lovely Pair Of Ginger Street Cats
During our feeding this afternoon, we found these two lovely ginger (red) males near some amazing Geraniums. They were scared and hungry. We soon made sure they enjoyed some food.
24 March 2013 - The Rescue Of "Pearl"
We were informed by local people of a cat living in a derelict shop in Samos Town. Each time we visited, we could not find the cat. However, in the last days, we were lucky enough to find her. We have called her "Pearl". She appears to be deaf too.
Maybe a pet that was thrown out, we will never know. She is safe in one of our Foster Homes now. Hopefully once she is sterilised, we can offer her for adoption to a forever home.

22 April 2013 - An Update On "Boris Junior"
Many of you will remember when we said we had rescued little "Boris Junior" from the streets of Samos Town because of an angry Taverna owner.
Well, here he is today in one of our Foster homes in Samos. Just amazing. He is sleeping a lot - we guess making up for sleepness nights on the streets. This photo makes us so happy!

"Hello I am Romeo.....
I am looking for a home where I can stay forever and be happy!
Currently I live in a Foster Home in Samos - I am about nine months old and in late September 2012 I was found next to my dead mother together with my sister Juliet. Now thanks to the great love and care of my Foster Home, I became a healthy big boy. Who can offer me the loving home i need?"

29 March 2013 - Help Us To Help More Street Cats
It makes us so happy to see street cats looking happy and healthy. This is "Cynthia" who lives in Samos Town - she was sterilised by us in September 2012 during our big project in Samos. We feed her everyday now.
Remember, we always need on-going donations to fund our work, especially the big projects. Just a the price of your cup of coffee can help us achieve so much more.
If you have never donated before, it is very easy and simple and we promise that 100% of donations go to help the street cats.

29 March 2013 - An Update On "Lizzie" in Samos
We know many of our supporters ask us about street cat "Lizzie" in Samos. She still suffers from fluid in her belly and takes a daily Cortisone tablet together with additional vitamins. She is seen here relaxing after a tasty lunch of Amazon food.
Poor Lizzie has had such a hard life and lost all but one of her many babies over the last two years. We try our best to give her love and attention everyday.

28 March 2013 - The Street Cats Of Samos Say "Thank You"
An amazing delivery of Amazon donations this week - no time to waste, it was straight out to the most hungry and needy. These photos show a big group in Samos Town enjoy real food rather than looking for scraps in the waste bins
27 March 2013 - Feeding Time In Kokkari, Samos
We made a visit to Kokkari to see how the local street cats are living. Although we were pleased to see many healthier cats with "clipped" ears, there is still much work to do in this area. We saw a few cases of Cat Flu which we will try and treat with medicines. We hope you enjoy seeing these photos.
27 March - Thank You For The Donations For Medicines
We posted earlier this week about the wonderful donations for medicines for the street cats...well today we were able to use the first of these medicines. This poor young male has a really blocked nose. We will give him Veraflox tablets.
27 March 2013 - Our Volunteers At Work
Two of our volunteers were out today feeding the street cats in Kokkari and also giving medication for a few cats with cat flu symptoms. Here Mike and Kiki are greeted by a few hungry street cats. Mike was feeding and Kiki making sure we took away all our packets and litter.

Street Cat Charlie Brown loves the taste of the Amazon food but we are sure he really does prefer the lovely box too.
26 March 2013 - More Great Deliveries From Amazon - Thank You!!!
One of the nicest things this week was seeing the Samos postman bring a big batch of Amazon deliveries to us in Samos. Here street cats Charlie Brown and Lizzie inspect the boxes.
Some of this was out to the street cats straight away, and much more over the weekend, Thank you to everyone who kindly bought food from our wish list - it is really appreciated.

20 March 2013 - Keeping a Check On "Bertie"
We are keeping a check on street cat "Bertie" - he was sterilised by us on 1st March and was found to have some nasty wounds around his neck area. We think that he was trapped inside a building before we found him.
At the time of sterilising, he was treated with a 2 week anti-biotic "Convenia". His wounds are dry now, and this morning he enjoyed some tasty breakfast from our Amazon donations.

18 March 2013 - "Adopt" Lizzie and Help Her Get Better
You can help our Lizzie now by adopting her on a distance, for 2.50e a month. The money will be spent on food, medication for Lizzie only.
Lizzie still needs daily medicine to reduce the fluid in her belly and to get her back a better state of health.

17 March 2013 - Charlie Brown and Chrissy

17 March 2013 - Leo's New Life in Holland
Here is a photo taken this month of Baby "Leo" who, together with his mother "Chelsea" were our first adopted Samos cats of 2012. They both flew to a new home in Holland on 22 June last year.
As you can see, Leo has grown in a very hadsome cat. His mother is happy and well too.

15 March 2013 - Baby "Boris" In Samos
A few months ago we reported the death of one of our favourite street cats "Boris" with his amazing odd eyes. Boris clearly had links to the Turkish Angora breed.
Amazingly today, whilst we were feeding in Samos Town, we came across "Boris Junior" with exactly the same looks. Could he be the son of Boris, it could well be. This little one was very wild and very very hungry. We will do our best to give him food everyday.

14 March 2013 - Geri...Forever In Our Hearts
Yesterday we were sent a photo of little Geri in her new home in Switzerland.
Geri was found in December as a small kitten wandering the streets of Samos with
a broken leg - after an operation with the vet in Samos on 14 December, she made
a full recovery. She flew to her forever home on 31 January.
Sweet Geri.

12 March 2013 - Emergency With Charlie Brown
Small emergency with Charlie Brown today...he had obviously been fighting last night (which is not like him at all) and this morning he was unable to open his right eye.
After a quick check at the resident vet, it seems he has an ulceration. He will need Tobrex anti-biotic drops twice a day for two week. Poor Charlie.

9 March 2013 - New Poster In Greek to Explain "Clipped Ears"
We have had this one page information sheet produced in Greek about why street cats have "clipped ears" and how it helps the community and liv s of those cats sterilsed.
It will be part of our education in Samos to show the work done on the island by visiting and resident vets. This text is specific to Samos island.
It can only help!

5 March 2013 - An Update On "Lucky" In Samos
Just amazing!!! Here is "Lucky" who was found lying in the road in Kokkari on 17 January. What an amazing change of health.
His lower jaw is still a little out of it's normal place, but Lucky eats and plays well now. All thanks to some of the great people in Samos who have looked after him in the last months.

05.03 - Now called "Magic" - this very lucky kitten is enjoying her life in her new forever home in Samos. We are so happy with her progress since she was rescued from the streets in Samos Town. A big thank you to our great supporters Phil and Viv for the updated photo.
Magic is still having eye drops in the hope that some sight may be restored to her left eye.

5 March 2013 - Feeding The Street Cats In Posidonio, Samos
Today, we managed to get some of the Amazon food to the street cats who live in the tourist resort of Posidonio. During the winter, it is like a ghost town and many of the local cats find it hard to find food.
4 March 2013 - An Update On "Louis" Who Now Lives In Austria
Little Louis will always have a place in our hearts....he was found almost dead on the streets of Samos on 29 June 2012. Now he is happy and healthy in his new home in Austria.
Louis is an inspiration to the Samos street cats that will hopefully find a home in Europe during summer 2013.

3 March 2013 - Feeding The Ormos Cats
This week we were able to transfer some of our donated food plus some of the recent Amazon orders over to our volunteers in the south of Samos (Ormos). It is great that we can now do our best to help the cats in this part of Samos, where there are many unsterilised and hungry street cats.
This poor male cat in Ormos has a wound from either hot oil or hot water that has been likely poured on him by person unknown. This kind of cruelty is beyond words.
We are sorry to have to show this photo, but when visitors see "Cute Cats Of Greece" calendars in summer shops, the world we see could not be further from those scenes.

3 March - Back To Ireon, Samos With Catfood
We reported earlier this week how we had found a desperate situation in Ireon, Samos. The good news is that thanks to some extra efforts, we have been able to get more food to the street cats there in the last days. Feeding by our team, plus some great work by our supporters Phil and Viv, has really helped. Here are some photos from Ireon this week.
26 February 2013 - Feeding The Street Cats In Ireon
Today our team in Samos were busy in the village of Ireon on the south coast of the island. The situation there is very desperate with the street cats - there cats on every corner and every street. We saw many that were in very poor condition and some very thin cats. The situation brought tears to our eyes.
We gave them as much food as we could, but clearly we need to make regular visits, otherwise many will surely die of starvation.

26 February 2013 - An Update On Roland
We sterilised "Roland" a very wild and angry street cat from Samos Town last week. After his re-release, we did not see him for a few days and we were getting worried. However, today he came for breakfast and enjoyed some donated food. But, still very shy and wild.

23 February 2013 - R.I.P Harry
Sometimes even our very best is not enough...we are very upset to report that "Harry" died in his sleep in the last days. We tried very hard to help him with lots of vetinary care, love, attention and tasty food. We thought he was on the path to a full recovery. RIP dear Harry.
22 February 2013 - Sterilising Roland And A Busy Day Cat Feeding
Today we were very busy in Samos. Our day started by sterilised a very wild and angry male from the streets of Samos Town. He fought hard in the cage as the anesthetic was given. We have been feeding him for many months now and he is called Roland.
He was released later in the evening when he has fully recovered.

20 February 2013 - Great Teamwork With Our Friends at Animal Care Samos
Today we collected many boxes of catfood from our great friends at Animal Care Samos. They had very kindly arranged the transport from Holland to Samos of our donated food together with their own supplies.
Great teamwork, and a big thank you to all the Animal Care team. Within
an hour, the food was with the street cats as seen here.

20 February 2013 - A Case Of Flea Allergy Dermatitis
You may recall the kitten we reported with very bad Flea Allergy Dermatitis - we applied "Stronghold" the day after the photo was taken. Yesterday, we saw her again and she was looking much better. We will give another treatment soon. She is seen here enjoying food from us.
We always need medicines like Stronghold, can you help us?

Please help us, to continue getting cats neutered in Samos!
Although we are now undertaking sterilisations year round, we would like to do a lot more work.
We ask for your help to continue our so very important neutering of the street cats of Samos. Right now many many kittens are being made, sadly we know the most part of these newborn will... only live very short lives.
And did you know that: (info thanks to our friends and collegues Nine Lives Greece):
* One female cat and her female offspring can produce 63 kittens in one year alone
* In a single year, a male cat can father as many as 2500 kittens
* As long as these birth rates exist there will never be enough homes for all the animals
* 90% of cats who are run over by cars are unneutered, usually in search of a mate
* If there is a small and stable population of healthy neutered animals, newcomers do not move in to fill the area
* Neutered cats live longer, healthier lives – avoiding the risks that come with roaming during mating season
We need your help to help us make the difference

15 February 2013 - Mini Sterilisation Project In Samos
As many of the male and female street cats in Samos are very busy making kittens right now, we took a decision to undertake a little project to sterilise as many male street cats as we could in one day. Today, we booked the local vet in Samos to work for us and we went out trapping, neutering and returning all day. It does not sound many, but we caught and successfully sterilised 9 male cats from two locations in Samos.
If our donations allow, we will do another of these “mini” projects soon. We were happy with the results and the great teamwork with the resident vet in Samos Town.

15 February 2013 - Feeding The Street Cats In Kokkari
Today, we took the opportunity to take some food to the Kokkari cats. They enjoyed some tasty food. We dont normally feed here as the cats are fed by the great team at Animal Care Samos.
14 February 2013 - Another Cat Emergency Today!
Today we were advised that a street cat in Kokkari was found bleeding from it's ear and was smelling badly. We managed to capture the male (which had been sterilised and ear clipped) and take it to the vet in Samos Town.
14 February 2013 - Sterilising "Valentine"
Today was a day for sterilising a street cat - we could not find the one we had in mind, but this lovely male came along.
We did not have a name for him before, so what better than "Valentine". Today, was not a day for him to be romantic, but now he will live a happy healthy life.

13 February 2013 - An Amazing Donation Today!
A fantastic delivery by the postman in Samos today - a big parcel of cat toys, blankets, medicines and food from our great supporter Miska in Finland. Thank you so much Miska and also for translating the medicine directions in English for us.
Here street cats "Charlie Brown" and "Lizzie" inspect the arrival of the cat things.

8 February 2013 - The Story Of A Street Cat In Samos
"All I have ever known is this rubbish bin. I was born here and I will die here. I stay everyday in the hope that maybe, just maybe, there will be something tasty in the human food waste. My dream is that a nice person will pass by and give me food. Is that too much to ask in my little life?"
(photo taken in Samos yesterday).

8 February 2013 - Happy Street Cats Thanks To Amazon
More fantastic deliveries from Amazon - thank you so much to our supporters Gabriele and Karin for their purchases. Within hours of the postman arriving in Samos, we were able to get the food out to the street cats. The photo shows a big group of 20+ cats enjoying the food bought through Amazon.co,uk.
7 February 2013 - Rubbish Bin to Vets To New Home...in just 2 Hours!!
Today we found a very poor looking kitten living by the rubbish bins, very under-weight and a with a serious eye problem. Straight to the vets in Samos Town for treatment. We think the eye can be saved, but it may take time. The kitten also has a upper respiratory infection but is otherwise healthy. Then, amazingly, within 2 hours of finding her, we found her a Forever home with a kind person in Samos. Amazing!!
7 February 2013 - Sterilising "Archie"
Today we sterilised a male street cat we have called "Archie" - he is seen here In the vets today looking rather scared. We have the option now with the street cats to give them a 2 week long lasting anti-biotic after the operation. This is much easier than trying to give tablets to street cats for the days after the operation. We did that today with Archie.
6 February 2013 - An Update On Harry
An update on "Harry" who was found by us on 13 January with bad injuries. He continues to improve, and the swelling has really gone down. He doesn't really eat dry food but loves pate (but not so fussy with food anymore). He purrs a lot when being cuddled too! he other good news is that his hair is growing slowly on the spots where he lost it. Well done Harry!
6 February 2013 - An Update on "Lizzie" In Samos
She is slowly improving now that she is taking medicines. Every day, we are
giving her:
* Prezolon 5mg - 1/2 a tablet once a day. A Cortisone to promote healing.
* Lassix 40mg - 1/4 tablet once a ...day. To relieve water retention.
* Bytril 15mg - one tablet per day. An Anti-biotic.
* Bactroban - cream for her sore bottom.
We are happy with her progress, and we will continue with her medications every day.

5 February 2013 - Saving "Jacob"
Today, we managed to capture a real “catch" of the day” – Jacob is about 8 years old and a real street fighting Tomcat that we feed most days. We have been planning to capture him for some time now and this week we noticed a big abscess on the right side of his face, so it was time to go and get him done. However, during the sterilisation, it became clear that his right testicle had a problem and was close to a cancerous stage. Had we left him any longer, poor Jacob may have not had much more life. Now, he will hopefully live a long and quiet life.
5 February 2013 - An Amazing Donation On The Way To Samos!
An amazing donation of assorted cat goodies for the street cats in Samos from our great supporter Miska in Helsinki, Finland. The pillows are for our Greek Cat Rescue Cat Houses too (made to measure!!).
Thank you so much Miska, you are a cat angel.

4 February 2013 - Flea Allergy Dermatitis Problem
We spotted this young cat with Flea Allergy Dermatitis today...it was missing lots of fur across it's body and head (not so clear in this photo) and also a large area of it's tail fur missing.
We will treat this with a "Stronghold" tomorrow.

3 February 2013 - April Kittens Are Coming!
Everywhere we go in Samos right now, we see groups of male cats chasing a lone female....April kittens in the making. We can only hope that our sterilisation projects in the last years have had a good effect and will mean less kittens on the streets.
This is why it is important for us to "keep going" and sterilise as many street cats as possible.
These two were seen "busy" in Pythagorio, Samos!!

3 February 2013 - We Need Cat Medicines!
At the moment many cats in Samos suffer from Cat Flu.
Therefore we need (to buy) medications to help them, like Tobadrex eyedrops and antibiotics like Baytril. We also need de-Flea and de-worming pipettes (pipettes are much easier to give to street cats) like Stonghold or Advantage.
Can you help us?

3 February 2013 - A Fantastic Donation Today!
Today (from an anonymous company in Holland), we received a donation of cat benches!
They are very welcome indeed... we can use these for sick or injured and recovering cats, and for orphaned kittens! They will ONLY be used for very short periods! Not to keep cats in for long stay periods.
Hopefully, the benches will arrive in Samos soon!

3 February 2013 - Amazon.co.uk - Buy The Street Cats Some Food.
You dont need to live in England or have a UK account to buy us cat food for the street cats. Wherever you live, worldwide, you can use this link to help the cats.
Remember to get FREE postage to Samos - you have to spend 25 UK Pounds (about 31 Euros). This is working really well for the street cats in Samos, but please continue to make your orders.

2 February 2013 - An Update On "Jaffa"
Last week, we brought you news of "Jaffa" who had such a badly injured front leg that we had to take him to the vet for it to be amputated. A week later, he has been released in a quiet area where he will be monitored by one of our supporters.
He is doing well and has adapted to living his life with three legs very well. We continue to give him anti-biotics with his food.

2 February 2013 - A Fantastic Donation!
A fantastic donation today from the "Tatzenladen" company in Germany who
make and distribute a range of natural cat food products for adding to raw cat
food diets.
They have said how much they support our work in Samos. Thank you so much Tatzenladen. We appreciate the food and your support.

1st February 2013 - Please help us to help “Lizzie” in Samos
We don't normally single out a particular street cat in Samos for help, but today we would like to ask for help for an amazing cat called “Lizzie”
She lives on the streets in Samos Town and in the... last years, she has had kittens after kittens, many of who don't survive very long. We sterilised her in 2012 just after she had three beautiful kittens (seen here). Lizzie finds it hard to survive and we try and feed her as often as we can with donated food.
In the last weeks, her health has deteriorated and we took her for urgent help at the resident vet in Samos. Although a blood test revealed no major illnesses (FIP / FIV) and no problem with her Thyroid, she must have medication daily to relieve her symptoms and “water” in her abdomen. She may also have a heart problem and we can raise the funds to pay for this expensive test, she will have it done a soon as possible.
Your donations have helped us to feed Lizzie and also to get her checked at the vets recently, but these costs are mounting and we need to help to make sure Lizzie will have a healthy future.
If we can get her well again, we promise to find her a forever home in Europe as soon as we can.
Please help us to help “Lizzie” in Samos - you can make a donation through Paypal, or to our charity account in Holland. Please use reference “Lizzie”

1st February 2013 - Greek Cat Rescue Catnip Mice
A fantastic donation today from one of our supporters, David Jones, in the UK who hand-made these amazing Catnip Mice for us to sell to support our work.
Thank you David, we really appreciate your help and efforts for the street cats.
If we sell all these mice (priced at 3e each) that will give us enough money to sterilise two street cats!

31 January - The Sterilising of "Gerald" and "Golden Balls"
Today was a very busy day for our team in Samos. After the early start to take little Geri to Samos airport, we wanted to sterilise a very sexually active Tomcat we have called “Goldenballs” ! Whilst we were catching Mr Goldenballs, we noticed another male that had a bad food injury, so we grabbed him too!! As it was Geri’s day, we called this big male “Gerald”. Here are the photos of the work today.
30 January 2013 - Street Cat "Lizzie" Rushed to See The Vet In Samos
Our old friend "Lizzie" has not been good for a few weeks now. She is in very poor
condition and we noticed in the last few days that she has breathing problems. We decided that she should visit the vet without further delay.
Lizzie has had a blood test but it seems that she may have "Hyperthyroidism" - she has all the classic symptoms:
* Weight Loss
* Increased Appetite
* Restlessnes
* Poor Hair Condition
* Increased Drinking
* Difficulty Breathing.
We will get the results on Friday this week - if it is Hyperthyroidism, this means she will have to have medication every day which is very difficult for us with a street cat. Poor Lizzie! (she is pictured here at the vets a few hours ago).

26 January 2013 - An Update on "Harry" in Samos.
He has put on almost a kilo in 11 days, and the vet in Samos was very pleased with his progress so far. The wounds on his neck are almost closed but his cheek is still swollen and weeping and it may not go back to its normal size because the injury is so old. He starts new antibiotics today for a further 16 days and has started an anti-inflammatory regime for 7 days, after which he will be checked again.
We are so proud of you Harry, well done!

25 January 2013 - Saving "Jaffa" in Samos
Last night, on a very stomy night, we managed to trap a young cat with a very injured front leg. His leg had been previously broken, maybe in a car accident and he was dragging the injured leg causing major skin and nerve damage. Luckily, with our new trapping cages, we caught him easily and took him immediately to the vet in Samos Town.
We have called the little cat "Jaffa" and this morning he had to have an immediate operation to remove the front right leg. This was the only option as the leg was severely infected and damaged beyond repair. Whilst, he was under anesthetic, we took the opportunity to sterilise him too.
He will be fostered by one our supporters in Samos while he recovers.

A huge delivery of food today from Amazon - thank you to everyone who purchased on-line for us recently, amazing!!! We and the street cats thank you much.
(there is a tempoary problem with Amazon deliveries at this time - we think this is due to bad weather in England - we hope orders can be made again soon).

24 January 2013 - Street Cat "Yogi" is sterilised today!
Street cat "Yogi" (full name Yogi Bear) was taken today for steriisation by the local vet in Samos Town. As part of our winter programme to "Sterilise one a week", we have wanted to catch Yogi for some time now. We will not be clipping his ear as we think that Yogi will find a forever home in Europe during the summer. Yogi has amazing looks and a loving and happy personality. Sadly, he does not have a good life on the streets and is often "raped" by another male cat.
We hope that we can continue to feed Yogi on a regular basis, and find him a forever home this year.

24 January 2013 - Geri Kitten gets her Pet Passport!
Today, little Geri Kitten visted the resident vet in Samos Town to have all her arrangements made for a new forever home in Basel, Switzerland. Her Pet Passport was issued, she was Microchipped and vaccinated and a general check up was made.
Geri has doubled her weight since her operation and her leg is fully recovered. She can run and play normally and is now enjoying a happy kitten life.
Geri will be our first adoption of the year from Samos in 2013, and we are very happy and pleased about her recovery. We wish you well for the future little Geri.

20 January 2013 - Saving "Lucky" in Samos
This young cat was found lying in a pool of blood in the middle of a busy road in Kokkari, Samos. He was thankfully spotted by two of our supporters and volunteers in Samos (Phil and Viv). They took the cat (now named Lucky) to the local vet in Samos Town who confirmed that it had suffered head injuries from a road vehicle and was in a semi-coma like state. It was suggested by the vet that the next 48 hours would be critical and Lucky should be given Cortisone tablets and lots of rest and recovery.
As an update to the story of "Lucky" - he is pictured here a few days later. He has responded well to the Cortisone tablets and his left eye is now open. The eyes are still enlarged due to the accident, but it hoped that this condition will improve.
Lucky is also on a treatment of Royal Canin "Convalescence" food which he enjoys very much.
We will update more news about Lucky soon....

16 January 2013 - A story of Feeding Street Cats in Samos
Our volunteers in Samos work hard to feed the street cats whenever they can. This week was no exception, we were able to feed many hungry mouths. In the wintertime, the street cats hide from the weather and cold and often you will see just one lonely cold and hungry cat sitting by a rubbish bin.
However, when the food is opened there are suddenly 30 more screaming at you!!
This scene was in Samos Town when our volunteers stopped after seeing a very cold and wet cat looking hungry by a rubbish bin. Luckily, we had enough food for everyone.
We have made a note of this location for future feeding and sterilisations.

Harry was found on Sunday in Ormos, Samos. He
was in an awful condition - a lovely male of about 3/4 years old. He has a big
abscess behind his right ear, probably from a bite and a painful back leg and
tail. His fur will need lots of attention too.Our team have rescued him and
taken him to the local resident vet, where we also took the opportunity to
sterilise him. Harry is now being cared for in a foster home while he makes a
recovery.

12 January 2013 - "Marmalade" Finds A Forever Home!
We rescued little kitten Marmalade from the streets in Samos back in September 2012. He had a very bad eye infection, so we decided to keep him safe and make treatment for his bad eye. After some days, we found him a home at a family in Samos who agreed to treat his eye and give him love and attention.
However, when we went back to check on his progress, his eye was in a worse condition!!! We took immediate action and took him back to a temporary foster home in Samos (where we keep kittens awaiting adoption).
Now, a few months later, Marmalade is fit and well and today will move to his forever home with an English family living in Samos. Enjoy your forever home little sweet Marmalade.

December 2012 - Saving Little "Geri" Kitten
In mid-December, while our team were out feeding in Samos, we found this lovely kitten walking in a very bad way. When we picked her up, it was obvious that there was a serious problem. We took her immediately to the local vet in Samos Town who diagnosed that her back left leg was broken.
A long operation was made on 14 December to insert a metal pin into her leg so that the leg would naturally heal. This operation was paid for using donations.
She is doing very well now, and we are happily arranging for her to go to a forever home in Switzerland.

24 December 2012 - Our New Trapping And Transfer Cages Arrive In Samos!
During our last sterilisation project in Sepetmer 2012, we learned many lessons about the equipment we need and what works best for the street cats and our helpers. Thanks to some geat recent donations, we have been able to purchase some new trapping cages and associated transfer cages. These will greatly assist in the catching of feral street cats for sterilisation.
The new trapping cages are silent in operation and are able to be loaded into a normal size car which helps us a lot. They are also very cat friendly and do not harm or injur the cats in any way.
We have already started using the new equipment.

December 2012 - Greek Cat Rescue Cat Houses!!
We have designed our very own Greek Cat Rescue "Cat Houses" for use in Samos where street cats may need shelter from winter weather. Made from a very strong wood structure and covered in Marine wood with a waterproof membrane roof, they are good against bad weather and rain.
So far, we have made two houses and they are named after street cats that we have cared for in the past but are no longer with us. We have "Villa Boris" and "Villa Ziggy" - our third, still under construction, will be called "Villa Leo".
They are very reasonable to make and we will see how the cats like them. We will keep them in places where we can monitor their use, in private courtyards and outside of shops of our volunteers.
We hope the cats like them and they will last a long time.

December 2012 - Year Round Sterilisations Of Cats In Samos
Until now, we have only been able to undertake sterilisations of cats and older kittens during our own sterilisation projects in Samos, often in just one week a year. But we have now agreed a deal with the local vet in Samos Town who has agreed to sterilise one cat a week for us at a very low cost to our charity!!
This is great news, and we are now undertaking a TNR (trap, neuter and return) programme once a week. We can continue this throughout the year as long as donations allow us to continue.
Shown here is "Bruce" who was sterilised on 27 December. His ear is clipped but this is not very clear in the photo.

13 October 2012 - The Big Clean Up!
After the Sterilisation Project in September, it is back to business for our team in Samos. All the cat boxes and equipment have to be cleaned, sterilised and stored for the next time. The photo shows just a few of our Cat Boxes being cleaned in Samos Town.
24 September 2012 - Romeo, Juliet and Little Ceasar
Towards the end of our Sterilisation Project, Romeo and Juliet were found by us crying next to their dead mother in Kokkari, Samos. Arround the same time, little Ceasar was found by some kind tourists in the Valley of the Nightingales, Samos.
We took them to our foster home in Samos where they could be cared for. Sadly, even with our very best efforts, little Ceasar died on 19.10.12. RIP Little one

September 2012 - Greek Cat Rescue Sterilization Project - A Big Success!
The first priority of our charity Greek Cats Rescue is, and still remains, sterilisations to reduce the population of suffering cats and kittens.
In September 2012 on the Aegean island of Samos, with the help of three volunteer veterinarians from the UK and Holland, we have spayed/neutered a total of 175 cats in just 4.5 days. These cats were from many parts of Samos but mainly from the village of Kokkari. All cats and kittens were collected carefully and returned to exactly the same spot again afterwards. We also gave medical treatment to many sick cats, however some were too sick to help and had to unfortunately be put to sleep, which was necessary but very sad.
All sterilised cats and kittens are given a "clipped ear" which indicates they have been seen and sterilised. This enables everyone in Samos to see which cats have been sterilised and also prevents us collecting or trapping the same cats again in following years.
During and after the project we received large number of compliments from the local people, who are becoming more aware of the importance of sterilisation and support of the stray cats. However, we still have a lot of work to do to win the "hearts and minds" of all the local people (mainly the older generations) as sterilisation is not always favoured and welcomed even for street cats - some prefer the use of poison in wintertime casing horrific deaths for village cats. We hope that our work, and the sight of clipped ears, will bring an eventual end to this barbaric behaviour.
In addition during our stay, we found approximately 14 orphan kittens (some were very sick and needed our help). We were able to find forever homes, fosters or adopters for ten of them on Samos, two other kittens travelled to the Netherlands for adoption.
We want to say thank you to: Animal Care Samos (without you all of this would not have been possible!), Cordelia Madden and Nine Lives Greece, Greek Cat Welfare Society, veterinarians Alan, Juliet and Loes, many sponsors who helped with donated materials and medications, all the volunteers who helped out in many ways, and last but not least all the supporters who have made this project possible!

Our goals for 2012! 2 February 2012
Our important goals for this year!
- We are preparing new sterilisation campaigns on Samos, we are going to help many more cats this time on Samos! One sterilisation campaign costs us about 3700 euro's. Please help us to do more by making a donation!
- We want to start fund raising for the realisation of a cat shelter on Samos, there is nothing like this at the moment on Samos, but its very needed for sick, weak, or injured cats and kittens like the ones on the picture here and below we encountered on Samos late 2011..
We know already of a suitable piece of land , we need a lot of money (about
at least 25.000 euro! to make this possible, help us to help them!

Pictures of some orphan kittens from Samos that were adopted last year!
In the year 2011 we took 7 former orphan kittens from Samos to Holland. All of them wouldn't have survived on the streets if we wouldn't have taken them with us.
For all seven we could find a loving home, see below some pictures of Sammie, Mike, Benthe, Indy, Luna and Momo enjoying their new home and friends!

Giant cat food donation! January 2012
End of november 2010 we got a large amount of cat food from our sponsor Dutch 'Animal Foundation Platform' ) www.animalfoundationplatform.nl of in total 1600 kg's!!
The cat food was shipped to Samos by our partner Animal Care Samos and arrived on Samos end of December. At the moment hungry stray cats are being fed with the food and it's being shared to helpers around Samos! As we know, especcialy in winter stray cats in Greece are struggling to survive, at least some of them have a little less hard time being provided with food!
See here a message from one of our helpers:
we got a lot of food from t shelter...and i go every day to feed around kokkari to feed the strays(note: kokkari is little village in Samos)..all the time..we are so gratefull to everybody who helped to send the food..

Our first sterilisation project; a big succes!
During the first week of october 2010, we had gathered enough money (ofcourse thanks to all our supporters!) to organize our first sterilisation project on Samos, We worked together with Animal Care Samos in the two villages of Kokkari and Ormos to help as much as stray cats and kittens as we could.
Voluntary vets Alan and Juliet from Scotland worked tiressly, together with all other voluntary helpers.
They could operate on no less than 32 cats a day; a fantastic number! (calculated was 20- 25 cats a day) but the cats kept coming in, and Alan and Juliet never stopped!
127 cats (both male and female) could be operated during only four days, a number could be treated for diseases like cat flue, and some cats had to be put asleep because it was too late, to prevent further suffering...
Sterilisations are part of our main goals, so we will do this again in 2012!
Vets Alan and Juliet, Animal Care Samos, Nine LIves Greece, all other helpers and all of our supporters, thank you so much!!

Prayer of a stray cat
Please send me somebody who'll care,
I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair.
My body is aching, it's so racked with pain,
And I pray as I run in the rain,
That someone will love me and give me a home,
A warm cozy bed to call my own.
My last owner neglected me and chased me away,
To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.
But now I'm tired, hungry and cold,
And I'm so afraid that I'll never grow old.
They've chased me with sticks and hit me with stones,
While I run in the streets just looking for bones.
I'm not really bad, please help if you can,
For I have become just a "victim of man!"
I'm wormy and I'm ridden with fleas,
And all I want is an owner to please.
If you find one for me, I'll try to be good,
I won't run away and I'll do as I should.
I don't think I'll make it too long on my own,
Cause I'm getting weak and I'm so all alone.
Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,
Cause I'm so afraid that I'm gonna die.
I've got so much love and devotion to give,
That I should be given a new chance to live.
So PLEASE, PLEASE answer my prayer,
And send me somebody who'll really care.

Successfull campaign for transport boxes! September 2011
Our organisation is doing well! Help comes from everywhere. On a saturday in september, Melanie Reissmann, one of our volunteers, campaigned together with a friend in the pet store named “Bobbaerts Zaadhandel”in Lanaken, Belgium!
We needed approximately 15 transport boxes for our sterilisation/ castration project for cats. They are necessary because, after the cats are caught in a special trap-cage, they have to be put in so-called transfer cages, so that the trap-cage can be used again as quickly as possible!
Melanie obtained a substantial discount from the store Bobbaerts Zaadhandel and together with a friend, she collected the remaining amount from customers.
They raised no less than 163 Euros, required for the 18 transport boxes! We would like to thank Melanie and her friend for their commitment and we would also like to thank Bobbaers Zaadhandel in Lanaken for making this campaign possible and for sponsoring the transport boxes!
