If You Are Visiting Samos On Holiday
*******************************************
If you are visiting the island of Samos for a holiday or a short break, you will see street cats on every corner. Usually, in the summer time, street cats have a better life as they can find food more easily from Tavernas, Cafes and Summer Houses.
If you have ever eaten at a Taverna in Greece in the summertime, you will have seen groups of cats and kittens all "asking" for food at your table. Many cats do get food this way, but there are also some tips you should know when on holiday in Greece....
* Try not to feed street cats when you are actually eating at tavernas. Some owners can get very angry with cats around tables or the effects of messy food stains on floors. Other diners may be allergic or have a fear of cats. Take dry or wet cat food with you, and before you eat, feed the cats well away from Tavernas in a quiet, non-residential area. Remember water too!
* Do not feed certain types of human food waste to street cats. Onions, Garlic, Mushrooms, Spices, Raw Potatoes, Tomatoes, Salami, Hams, Pork, Bacon, Chocolate, Raisins, Potato Crisps and Grapes are all examples of food that cats should not eat. Milk, Cheese and Tuna should also be in moderation.
* Remember if you are staying in an apartment or hotel, not to let cats enter bedrooms etc. This may upset owners and also affect other guests with allergies.
* Seeing young kittens all alone may not mean that they do not have a mother. Try not to take kittens away from where you find them unless you are 100% sure they are orphans. Leave them where they are, and check back later, maybe the mother has returned.
* Cats without collars seen in the street may actually be owned by a local person - feed and give love and attention, but be careful not to take cats away to new areas, or to hotel rooms etc.
* If you find a sick or injured cat then seek advice from a local vet. There are two good vets in Samos (In Vathi and also in Karlovassi). Vets work "normal" shop hours in Greece and may not work weekends.
* If you see a cat that you would like to take home, you will need a "Pet Passport" (a must for cats travelling within Europe) which includes a Rabies Vaccination and Microchip. Please consult a local vet in Samos for more help and advice.
* Drive carefully, especially at night, there are many cats in Samos that run out onto roads!
