Adopt A Samos Cat!
Help Us to Give A Samos Street Cat A New Life And A Forver Home

Since 2011, we have started to actively seek new homes for some of
the cats in Samos that we care for day to day. We can do this using charter flights that operate from Samos Airport to many European cities between the end of April and mid-October.
Once we have found a suitable new home and owner within Europe, it is often a big challenge to find a "Flight Escort" willing to take the cat on their flight and give the cat to the new owner on arrival.

How To Be A "Flight Escort"

When we find a new forever home for a Samos Street Cat, it is not always possible for the new owner to actually come to Samos and collect their new pet. In many cases, we rely on people travelling on charter flights operating from Samos who may be willing to take the cat to the European destination.
Some airlines from Samos will take cats at a small charge while others such as "Arkefly" (Dutch), take cats for FREE to Amsterdam Schipol (correct in 2012).
Being a flight escort involves very little work, other than to confirm the cat is travelling in your group and then to hand the cat to the new owner at the European Airport. We at Greek Cat Rescue will bring the cat to Samos Airport, help make all necessary reservations, pay any airline charges and make sure that the flight escort and cat are met at the destination.
We are always looking for "Flight Escorts" who can take cats for us and the new owners. If you are having a holiday in Samos, or coming to Samos, and would like to help, please tell us your flight dates.

Pet Passports For Street Cats

Any street cat lucky enough to find a home in another European country, must have a completed "Pet Passport". This is now a legal requirement for cats travelling within Europe. We at Greek Rescue organise this using local vets in Samos. A full Passport will include Microchip, documents, vaccinations, general health check and Flea, Tick and Worm treatments.
Becuase of our limited funds and the need to focus on sterilisation projects and cat feeding and emergencies, we try to ask the cost of the Pet Passport from new owners if possible.

Special Note Regarding Adoptions To The UK From Greece

We try to offer street cats from Samos new forver homes throughout Europe. The requirement for Pet Passports applies to all EU countries including the UK (there are no quarantine regulations now in the UK) and there are no additional "import" costs. Airlines apply a small fee (or free) for travel from Samos to European airports.
Howver, we have to advise our supporters in the UK, that although a cat can be taken to UK airports, there are significant costs applied by bother charter and scheduled airlines from Greece. As an example, taking a cat on the summer only Samos to London Gatwick route in 2013 can cost in excess of 500 Euro for the cat's flight ticket alone. We have no control over these costs which are made by the airlines.
If you live in the UK and would like to give a forever home to a Samos cat or kitten, please be aware that the cost of transportation can be very sigificant.

What New Owners Said About Greek Cat Rescue's Adoption Arrangements

"The contact with Greek Cat Rescue was always friendly and I had the feeling that every single cat is important for them. Every cat will get a chance to live no matter how sick, and Louis was really very sick. On every question I asked, I got a response soon. They kept me always informed about Louis and Aida, the visits by the doctor and how it works with the Pet Passports and the vaccinations. Even though I'm living in Austria it was no problem to find kind people for the transport. For is very important to say that I estimate the honersty of the team. All what they told me about Louis and Aida was true. The cats where healthy, well hometrained, they went from the first day on the cat-toilet and they are lovely and cute cats, they give so much everyday. I have a deep respect for the work of Greek Cat Rescue. Never saw people in an organisation with this power, intention and enthusiasm to help animals."

Dear cat lover,
Have you ever thought about adopting a cat from another country? Why not adopt a cat from Samos! There are so many lovely street cats waiting for you that need a forever home!
16 years ago we fell in love with a small grey kitten who was living in a hotel in Samos. After a few days we knew that we could not go home without it. At this time it was not easy to find a vet in Samos, but now it is much easier, and can be done totally legally with a pet passport.
This little kitten grew into a strong loving cat with an amazing character, very friendly and grateful of her new home. She is still an important part of our family and she left big footprints in our hearts.
We have adopted 10 cats in 16 years from Samos. They have all lived with our family (parents, aunt etc) or have been adopted by friends. All of them have showed the same characteristic; very friendly, they love attention, strong, clever, cuddly and very very thankful!
3 years ago I adopted a Samos cat with only 3 legs - she was already about 7 years old when we took her home to Switzerland. During her life In Samos, she used to fight for her life being outside day and night, summer and winter. I was worried how she would adapt to life in an apartment, but this was absolutely no problem - she was at home very quickly in her new place.
Maybe you followed the story about little Geri who was found with a broken leg and rescued by Greek Cat Rescue?
She the youngest cat adoption we made in our family. Everything like passport, microchipping and vaccinations where already organized by Greek Cat Rescue. I informed the airline in advance and was confirmed that Geri could fly to Switzerland in a cat bag in the cabin.Geri has felt immediately at home in Switzerland and has become friends with the other cats and with the dog. I am so happy that Geri has a good and safe life after all what happened to her. She is the star of our family and everybody has fallen in love with her immediately!
So please, if you are willing to adopt a cat from Samos, please send a message to Greek Cat Rescue (Homepage or Facebook) they will have a list of street cats available for adoption.
If you would like to know more about Samos cats and adoption you may also send me an email (German or English) on berger-karin@hotmail.com. It would be a pleasure to answer your questions and help, maybe some Samos cats will find a good forever home.
